On an inner-city site in Berlin-Weißensee, a residential ensemble brings together a renovated historic building and three new residential buildings to create a cohesive development. A refurbished existing building and three distinct building typologies—a front building, a garden building, and a row of townhouses—are arranged around a landscaped courtyard, forming a layered composition of private and shared spaces. The Baugruppe project was conceived and developed by zanderroth in collaboration with SmartHoming.

The architecture builds upon the site's existing structure. The historic building remains legible as part of the site's history while being complemented by the new buildings. Together, the ensemble comprises 47 homes of varying sizes and typologies, ranging from compact apartments and garden apartments to townhouses with private gardens. Four apartments within the existing building were carefully refurbished and integrated into the overall development.

The diversity of housing typologies accommodates a broad range of ways of living and fosters a stable, long-term neighbourhood community. At the heart of the ensemble is the landscaped courtyard. As its green centre, it connects the buildings through a shared outdoor space, enhancing everyday living while providing opportunities for meeting, play and recreation. Here, the landscape is conceived not as an addition to the architecture but as an integral and equal component of the project.

Developed as a Baugruppe, the ensemble combines individual living concepts with a strong sense of community. It creates a place where different historical layers, building typologies and ways of living come together. The dialogue between old and new, architecture and landscape, defines the identity of the ensemble and embeds it naturally within the established urban fabric of the neighbourhood.
