Ensemble of five residential buildings
Küstriner Strasse, Berlin
The urban context of Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen is highly heterogeneous, characterised by detached houses, large freestanding buildings, rows of housing, fragments and emerging sections of perimeter-block development, as well as a Soviet memorial.
At the corner of Küstriner Straße and Reichenberger Straße, an existing new-build development is complemented by further street-facing developments to the north and south. Within this context, a new residential development is being created for HOWOGE Wohnungsbaugesellschaft. Two five-storey perimeter-block buildings, clad in dark red and black brick slips, close the gaps along the street frontage, reinforce the spatial definition of the street and form a clear urban edge to the previously undefined green space. Within the block, three three-storey courtyard buildings complete the ensemble.
The development comprises five buildings with a total of 76 rental homes, ranging in size from 32.5 to 100 sqm. The ground-floor homes are fully accessible and each has its own private garden. By consolidating the street frontage, the new buildings create a sheltered inner realm, forming an intimate residential ensemble around a landscaped garden courtyard.
